The Panchang Wheel
Five elements, one cycle — how the Hindu calendar works
Every day on the Hindu calendar is defined by five elements, together called the Panchang: Tithi (the lunar day, from Amavasya to Purnima and back), Vaara (the weekday), Nakshatra (the Moon's position among 27 lunar constellations), Yoga (a Sun–Moon angular combination), and Karana (half a tithi). Festivals are set by Tithi, not the Gregorian date — which is why Diwali or Eid land on a different date each year.

Common questions
What is a Panchang?
A Panchang is the traditional Hindu almanac that tracks five daily elements — Tithi, Vaara, Nakshatra, Yoga and Karana — used to determine festival dates, auspicious timings (Muhurat), and fasting days like Ekadashi.
Why do festival dates change every year?
Most Hindu festivals are set by the lunar Tithi, not the fixed Gregorian date. Since a lunar year (~354 days) is shorter than a solar year (365 days), festival dates drift earlier by roughly 10–11 days each Gregorian year — occasionally corrected by an extra leap month (Adhik Maas).
What's the difference between Amavasya and Purnima?
Amavasya is the new-moon day, when the Moon is not visible — traditionally set aside for ancestor worship. Purnima is the full-moon day, associated with Satyanarayan Puja and festivals like Guru Purnima and Buddha Purnima.
What is Ekadashi and why do people fast on it?
Ekadashi is the 11th day of each lunar fortnight, occurring twice a month. Many Hindus, especially Vaishnavas, observe a fast on this day as a form of devotion to Vishnu.
Is Diwali the same date everywhere in India?
Yes — Diwali falls on Amavasya of the Kartik month, the same lunar day nationwide. What varies regionally is which festivals surround it (Govardhan Puja, Bhai Duj) and how many days the celebration runs.
